The Brain Flashcards
What is Biological psychology?
Biological psychology assumes that all behaviours have a biological basis and therefore are controlled/ determined by bodily systems
What are some of the biological factors that can influence our behaviour?
Hormones
Neurone activity
Genetics
Mutations of genes and evolution
Brain anatomy and differences
What are the different areas of the brain?
Striatum
Hippocampus
Amygdala
Hypothalamus
The limbic system
Prefrontal cortex
What is the function of the Striatum?
Has an important role in controlling movements and motivation
What is the function of the Hippocampus?
Responsible for the processing and storage of memory
What is the function of the Amygdala?
Responsible for regulating emotions and aggression
What is the function of the Hypothalamus?
The centre of the brain responsible for communicating to glands in the body and releasing hormones
What is the function of the limbic system?
This is responsible for the processing of emotions.
What is the limbic system made up of?
Made up of several parts of the brain- hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala and hippocampus
What is the function of the prefrontal cortex?
Responsible for executive functions- planning/ decision making as well as behaviours and characteristics in personality
What are the four lobes of the brain?
Frontal lobe
Temporal lobe
Parietal
Occipital
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Involved in decision making and planning
What is the function of the parietal lobe?
Involved in language and movement
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Involved in processing sensory information
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Involved in memory and emotions
