Q

Explain the ethical considerations for the biological practical

A

Deception- no deception necessary, aggression is tested first so they are less likely to change their answer
Right to withdraw- individuals are informed of their rights at he beginning and end of the investigation, they can also opt out at any time
Informed consent- the google form explain the aim, right to withdraw and consent before participants complete the questionnaire.
Protection of participants- data is kept anonymous/ records of data are kept confidential
Also reminded that aggression scores do not indicate aggressive behaviours (correlation not causation)
Debrief- Repeating aim, right to withdraw, email address for contact

Q

Evaluate the Biological practical (8 marks)

A

Generalisability- Weakness
Not representative as the practical used a small sample of 9 participants from the ages of 11- 73
Therefore, it is difficult to understand the relationship
Reliability- Strength
Standardised procedure- same IQ test, same aggression test and scoring
Test- retest reliability- meaning it could be repeated to see whether results are consistent
Application -
Validity- Strength and Weakness
Strength- Buss Perry aggression questions were vetted to remove any socially desirable questions so it is more likely to give an accurate representation of aggression
Weakness- Lacks ecological validity because the participants self reported their own aggression which may not truly reflect how aggressive they are in real life
Ethics- Strength
Debrief was provided before the investigation, data kept anonymous, informed consent was gained and participants were told their right to withdraw twice.

Q

Give a report of the sample used from the Biological practical

A

I recruited a sample through opportunity sampling. I did this by sending out my Google form to friends and family.
My sample consisted of 9 participants from the ages of 11- 73

Q

Give a report of the data collection techniques used in the Biological practical

A

Both co variables were measure using self report tests
These questions were used from an IQ testing platform as well as Likert scale questions from the Buss Perry questionnaire- altogether there were 14 questions
For example, ‘I am an even tempered person”

Q

Give a report on the ethical considerations of the biological practical

A

Before participants took part in the practical they were given a:
-debrief of the aim of the study
- told their right to withdraw
-gave consent
- that all data would remain confidential and anonymous
They were also told this at the end of the study

Q

Describe the descriptive statistics of the biological practical.

A

The data suggests there is a negative correlation between self reported aggression (out of 20) and IQ score. This can be seen when comparing participants 4 and 5 as participant 4 had an aggression score of -9 and an IQ score of 131compare to participant 5 whose aggression score was 5 and and IQ score was 116. However, there is an anomaly for participant 3 as a result of their aggression score being -2 and IQ score of 81. Therefore, this anomalous result does not fit in with the overall trend.

Q

Describe the inferential statistics of the biological practical.

A

The observed value for R was -0.175 suggesting that the data has no correlation. This is because the critical value for R when N= 9 participants at p=0.05 was 0.600. Therefore, as the observed value is not larger than the critical value, the data is not significant and the null hypothesis has to be accepted while the alternative hypothesis is rejected.
