The brain Flashcards
The wrinkled outermost layer of the brain
Cerebral cortex
Associated with reasoning, planning and other ‘higher functions’
Frontal lobe
Associated with movement and orientation
Parietal lobe
Processes sounds and language
Temporal lobe
Process visual information
Occipital lobe
Main branch that connect the brain to the rest of the body
Spinal cord
Sensory information arrives here and is then sent to the cortex
Thalamus
Controls homeostasis, hunger thirst etc
Hypothalamus
Associated with emotion and fear
Amygdala
Associated with learning and spatial memory
Hippocampus
Also know as the ‘little brain’; involved in motor control
Cerebellum
Simple structure that regulates breathing, heart rate and blood pressure
Brainstem
Bundle of neurons that connects the two hemispheres of the brain
Corpus Callosum
Material which consists of the ‘body’ of neurons
Grey matter
Material which consists of the axons of neurons
White matter
