The Brain Flashcards
What are the three major parts of the brain?
cerebellum, brain stem, cerebrum
What are the functions of the cerebellum?
coordinates voluntary muscles, maintains posture and balance, helps us learn new skills
Where does the cerebellum receive sensory input from?
eyes, ears, joints, muscles about position of body parts
What is the brainstem made up of?
midbrain; pons and medulla oblongota
What is the function of the midbrain?
involved in visual reflexes
Where is the pons located?
b/w the midbrain and medulla oblongota
What is the function of the pons?
controls certain respiratory functions
What is the function of the medulla oblongota?
contains centers that regulate heart and lung functioning, swallowing, coughing, vomiting, and sneezing
What is the function of the brainstem?
regulates function of organs, breathing & heartbeat
What is the brainstem a relay station between?
the cerebellum and cerebrum, the spinal cord and cerebellum
What is the largest part of the brain?
cerebrum
What is the function of the cerebrum?
communicates/coordinates activity of other parts of the brain, higher though process (learning, memory, speech, etc.)
What are the two halves of the cerebrum?
right and left hemisphere
What are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum called?
parietal, frontal, temporal, occipital
Where is the parietal lobe located?
top of head
