Q

How did Americas position after the war help the boom?

A

When the war started America did not join in. Instead sold Weapons, food and other goods to Britain and her allies. This meant an increase in jobs and made business very rich.
America joined the war in 1917, while it still lost 100000 men the impact of the fighting was minimal compared to many European countries. Germany, Russia, Britain and France were exhausted by the fighting. Millions of men had been killed, farmland and railways destroyed. America moved in to take control of these countries main industries such as Germany’s had been chemicals now America was the lead country in the chemicals industry.

Q

What was the main reason farmers became bankrupt?

A

During the war farmers were encouraged to produce as much food as possible, they brought machinery that meant lots of food could be produced quickly. All excess was sold abroad to countries unable to make food because of the war. When the war ended they continued to make vast amounts of food with no buyers from abroad the price of food fell dramatically, in the case of grain it became more expensive to make grain than it cost to buy.
