How did Americas position after the war help the boom?
When the war started America did not join in. Instead sold Weapons, food and other goods to Britain and her allies. This meant an increase in jobs and made business very rich.
America joined the war in 1917, while it still lost 100000 men the impact of the fighting was minimal compared to many European countries. Germany, Russia, Britain and France were exhausted by the fighting. Millions of men had been killed, farmland and railways destroyed. America moved in to take control of these countries main industries such as Germany’s had been chemicals now America was the lead country in the chemicals industry.
What was the “Assembly Line”?
The assembly line was invented by Henry Ford, the American Business man revolutionised the way products by the use of a conveyor belt. The idea was to bring work to the men, not the other way round, each man would do one job over and over again. This helped as it made the production cheaper and quicker. The design was copied all over the world as is still used to day.

- An electric conveyor belt carried the work to the men
- Each man would do his job over and over again, and tools would be brought to him this saved time as it wasn’t wasted fetching things
- by standardising all the part (same colour, same engine, etc) cost were kept down
- as production got quicker cost went down

What happened to the film industry during the boom?
The biggest success of the American economy during the boom was the movie industry by 1930 100 million Americans were going to the cinema every week. Actors such as Charlie Chaplain, Rudolf Valentino, Laurel and Hardy became celebrities.
In 1920 the worlds first talking film, The Jazz Singer, was released as well the introduction of Mickey Mouse.
What were Flappers?
Women enjoyed new found freedom in the 1920s. The most fashionable women were called flappers, they were recognisable by their short bobbed hair and short skirts. They wore lots of markup drank in public and smoked cigarettes, all of these weren’t done until then.
How did electricity benefit the boom?
America was the first country to have electricity in the majority of people’s homes, nearly 70%had it by 1927. This meant workers could spend their money on new electronic gadgets such as refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, etc. This created more jobs and higher wages , so more people could buy the products, this is know as the cycle of prosperity.
What was the cycle prosperity?
Where products are made, workers buy these products, more jobs increased wages, more people can buy these products, and the cycle keeps reapeating
What music became popular in the 1920s?
Jazz music became popular in the 1920s it originated in black communities in Harlem NY. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, had great opportunities playing in Nightclubs, making radio appearances as well as records.

What was the main reason farmers became bankrupt?
During the war farmers were encouraged to produce as much food as possible, they brought machinery that meant lots of food could be produced quickly. All excess was sold abroad to countries unable to make food because of the war. When the war ended they continued to make vast amounts of food with no buyers from abroad the price of food fell dramatically, in the case of grain it became more expensive to make grain than it cost to buy.

What is Laissez-Faire?
The republican party had a policy of Laissez-Faire. This is where they wouldn’t get involved in other countries disputes or matters. This is why they were reluctant join the First World War
