What is your understanding of the concept of the BodyMind?
The Body and Mind are linked and intelligently work together in in harmony and disharmony.
The Body & Mind is constantly talking to each other through our neural systems and biochemistry, sending and receiving messages through an intelligent feedback loop.
Our thoughts influence our body, everything we think affects us on a cellular level.
Our bodies can influence the mind, an example of this is during injury we can become depressed and anxiety can arise.
How would you describe the BodyMind concept to a student who is new to yoga?
Our thoughts influence our body, everything we think affects us on a cellular level.
Emotions store in our tissues e.g. tension in shoulders
Emotions and feelings like stress and anxiety (produce cortisol = inflammation) can lead to sickness and disease.
Likewise, our bodies can influence the mind, an example of this is during injury we can become depressed, and anxiety can arise
What is Neuroplasticity?
Habitual thought patterns hard wire us to react in the same way. However Conscious change is possible to break free from old patterns that no longer serve us.
Neuroplasticity is the science behind this realisation and is based on the concept that we can change these connections by disconnecting from one thought pattern and reconnect to new patterns through constant reinforcement and repetition to strengthen the new neural connections.
