The Body's Organization Flashcards
What elements do all cells have in common?
1) a cell membrane that allows certain substances in and out
2) a nucleus that directs activities within the cell
3) cytoplasm (watery fluid that fills spaces outside the nucleus)
What are the four levels of organization in the body?
Cells, tissue, organs, and systems
What are the four body planes?
Frontal, Sagittal, Midsaggittal, and Transverse/Horizontal
If a person is laying face down that are in what position?
Prone
If a person is laying face up, they are in what position?
Supine
What is the Frontal plane?
Separates the front of the body from the back
What is the Sagittal plane?
Divides the body or organ into unequal left or right sides.
What is the Midsaggittal plane?
Divides the body or organs into equal left or right sides.
What is the Transverse plane?
Divides the body into upper and lower planes, cutting across the body
What is Anterior/Ventral?
Towards the front: away from the back of the body
What is Posterior/Dorsal?
Near the back; toward the back of the body
What is Superior/Cephalad?
Above, toward the head
What is Inferior/Caudal?
Below, toward the soles of the feet
What is distal?
Farther from point of attachment to the trunk
What is proximal?
Near the point of attachment to the trunk
What is lateral?
Pertaining to the side, away from the middle
What is medial?
Towards the middle of the body
What are the two main cavities of the body?
Ventral and Dorsal
What is the ventral cavity made up of?
Thoracic and Abdominopelvic
What is the dorsal cavity made up of?
Cranial and Spinal
What does the abdominopelvic cavity split into?
Abdominal and Pelvic
What are the nine regions used to describe locations of underlying organs?
1 & 2) Hypochondriac (x2, left and right) - below cartilage of the ribs
3) Epigastic - just above the stomach
4 & 5) Lumbar (x2) - waist level, either side of the navel
6) Umbilical - middle, belly button
7) Hypogastric - middle, below belly button
8 & 9) Inguinal - groin, either side of Hypogastric
What are the four quadrants?
1) LUQ
2) RUQ
3) LLQ
4) RLQ
What are the 5 divisions of the back?
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacral, Coccyx
Cervical?
Neck
Thoracic?
Chest
Lumbar?
Lower back, below waist
Sacral?
Lower back
Coccyx?
Tailbone
What is myalgia?
Muscle pain
