the blood vessels ༊*·˚ Flashcards
what are the 3 types of blood vessels?
arteries, veins, capillaries
what is a capillary?
capillaries are delicate blood vessels that exist throughout your body. they transport blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in your organs and body systems. capillaries are the smallest blood vessels in your vascular system.
what is a vein?
veins are blood vessels located throughout your body that collect oxygen-poor blood and return it to your heart. veins are part of your circulatory system. they work together with other blood vessels and your heart to keep your blood moving. veins hold most of the blood in your body. the circulatory system is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the heart. arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins carry blood back to the heart.
what is a artery?
your arteries carry blood away from the heart to the organs. arteries distribute oxygen-rich blood to your body. arteries, part of your circulatory (cardiovascular) system, are the blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood from your heart to all of your body’s cells. they play a crucial role in distributing oxygen, nutrients and hormones throughout your body.
what is the largest type of blood vessel?
arteries
what is the smallest type of blood vessel?
capillaries
what do the substances in our body need to reach?
individual and specific cells
do arteries have thick outer walls, a small lumen and a thick layer of muscles and elastic fibres?
yes
do veins have a large lumen and fairly thin outer walls and a thin layer of muscle and elastic fibres?
yes
do capillaries have a very small lumen and a wall made of a single layer of cells?
yes
do humans have a single or double circulatory system?
humans have a double circulatory system, as do all mammals.
what is double circulation?
double circulation is defined as a circulatory system where blood passes through the heart twice and has two separate circuits, one for oxygenated blood and one for deoxygenated blood.
