The Blood And Circulatory System Flashcards
Circulatory system
The blood
The heart
The vascular system
Blood is composed of what?
45% is blood cels
-Erythrocytes - red blood cells, distribute oxygen to the cells of the body. Remove carbon dioxide form cells.
-Leucocytes - white blood cells, they kill invaders, such as bacteria
-Thrombocytes - Platelets, these are cell like structures that stick together to help form blood clots.
55% plasma
- water 90%
- take nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of body that need it
- Electrolytes
- immunoglobulins
The blood vessels
-Blood circulates around the body in blood vessels.
-The heart pumps the blood to the lungs, where it is oxygenated
-It then returns to the heart and is circulated throughout the body by the arteries
- The oxygen passes through tiny blood vessels called capillaries
- It then returns to the heart through the veins.
Functions of blood
-Transport of various gases, nutrients, hormones and waste.
-Regulation of water in the body and body temperature
-Protection against infection
-Clotting prevent blood loss
Effect of massage on blood circulation
Massage increases the amount of blood flow into the area.
Reddening of the skin is seen.
(Erythema)
Blood flow to the face and head
Arteries
-Internal carotid artery
-External carotid artery
-Common carotid artery
Veins
External Jugular
Internal Jugular
The lymphatic System
-The purpose of the lymphatics system is to collect germs, bacteria and waste that are in the body.
-It then Carrie’s these to the lymph nodes, where the lymph is filtered and made harmless
- it also takes digested fat away from the digestive system.
-It prevents tissues from becoming water logged.
Composition of Lymph
- fluid
- proteins
- waste products: toxins, carbon dioxide, urea.
- oxygen
- lymphocytes
-fats
