Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
What is Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy:
Is the study of the structure of living things such as bones
Physiology
Is the study of how lining things function, such as how the respiratory system works
Pathology
Is the study of why and how the body may disfunction due to disease or disorder
Body Planes
Coronal (frontal)- separate the front and back of the body
Sagittal (longitudinal) separates the left and right sides of the body
Transverse (axial)
Separates the upper and lower halves of the plane
Direction terms
Medial - towards the middle of the body
Lateral- away from the middle of the body
Distal- Farther than another structure from the point of attachment to the trunk. For example hand is distal to the elbow
Proximal- closer than another structure to the point of attachment to the trunk. For example the knee is proximal to the foot.
Anterior - the front of the body
Posterior the back of the body
