The Blood Flashcards
What is blood?
A Tissue that transports substances around the body.
What are the names of the four components that blood is made up of?
Red Blood cells
White Blood cells
Platelets
Plasma
Red blood cells Function:
To transports Oxygen from the Lungs to the rest of the body
Red Blood cell Structure:
They have a biconcave shape which gives it a larger surface area for absorbing oxygen
They have no nucleus to have carry more oxygen
They contain a red pigment called Haemoglobin which carries the oxygen
In the lungs, oxygen bind to the haemoglobin to create Oxyhaemoglobin and when in the body cells, it splits and releases Oxygen for respiration.
White blood cells Function:
To defend against any microorganism that cause disease and infection.
What are the 3 Ways that white blood cells defend from pathogens?
- Phagocytosis - Engulfing the pathogen and ingesting them
- Producing Antitoxins - To counteract and neutralise the effect of the toxins bacteria release.
- Producing Antibodies - Binding onto antigens and destroying them
White blood cells Structure:
They have a nucleus
Platelets function:
They help the blood to clot at any wound so you don’t lose too much blood.
Platelets stop any unwanted bacteria from infecting the wound.
Platelets Structure:
They are small fragments of cells with no nucleus.
Plasma function:
Carries everything in the blood (red blood cells ,white blood cells and platelets are all suspended in it)
Name all the things that the Plasma carries/transports
Glucose and amino acids
Carbon dioxide
Urea
Hormones
Proteins
Antibodies & Antitoxins
