The biological approach to treating OCD Flashcards
1
Q
State the way of treating OCD
A
- Drug therapy
2
Q
State the drugs that treat OCD
A
- SSRI’s
- Tricyclis
- Anti-anxiety drug
3
Q
State what SSRI’s are and their function
A
- Most commonly used
- Reduces anxiety with OCD
- Increases the levels of serotonin
Function:
- Blocks terminal buttons
- Prevents reabsorption of the neuron secreting the neurotransmitter
4
Q
State what Tricyclis are and their function
A
- 1st anti-depressants used for OCD
Function:
- Blocks transporter mechanism that reabsorbs both serotonin & nonadrenaline
- Therefore, more neurotransmitters are left in synapse
- As a result, prolongs their activity, eases transmission of next impulse
5
Q
State what Anti-anxiety drugs are and their function
A
- Manufactured under various trade names
- Slows down activity of the CNS
> Does this by enhancing activity of GABA
Function
Locks onto receptors - opens a channel - increases flow of Chlorine ions into neuron
- Chlorine ions = slow down neurotransmitters activity
