The biological approach to treating OCD Flashcards
drugs therapy
treatment involving drugs, i.e. chemicals that have a particular effect on the functioning of the brain or some other body system.
In the case of psychological disorders such as drugs usually effect neurotransmitter levels
SSRIs
antidepressant drug - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
work on serotonin system in the brain
serotonin released by certain neurons in the brain - presynaptic neurons and travels across synapse. Neurotransmitter chemically conveys the signal from the presynaptic neutron to the postsynaptic neutron and then it is reabsorbed by the presynaptic neurone where it is broken down and re-used.
- increase its levels in the synapse
- typical daily does of Fluoxetine is 20mg although this may be increased if it is not benefiting the patient.
- capsules or liquid
- takes 3-4 months of daily use for SSRIs have much impact on symptoms
Combining SSRIs with other treatments
drugs often used alongside cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
drugs reduce patients emotional symptoms
–> meaning patients can engage more effectively with the CBT
