The Biochemistry And Physiology Or Drug Addiction Flashcards
What is the brain?
The command centre of the body
What is the amygdala ?
Main function is emotional and social processing
What is the nucleus accumbens?
Motivation and reward system
What is the hippocampus ?
Involved the the formation of memories
What do addictive drugs do ?
They provide a shortcut to the brains reward system
What do neurons do ?
Brain cells that receive and send messages too and from other neurons
What do sensory neuron’s do?
Sensory neuron’s carry impulses to the interneurons of the brain
What do interneurons do?
Interpret impulses
What do Motor neurons?
Carry impulses to the muscles
What does dopamine do?
Critical role In the reward system, also implicated in Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia
What does serotonin do?
Regulated appetite, sleep, memory, behaviour and function of the cardiovascualr system
What does glutamate do?
increase the probability that the target cell will fire ac action potential
GABA? (Gamma-aminobutyric acid)
Turns the brain off , involved in sleep sedation, relaxation and reducing anxiety
Glutamate ?
Turns the brain on builds memory , regulates alertness , movement , sensations and mood
Endocannabinoids?
Regulates pain, appetite and coordination
