The Bilogy Of The Mind Pt.2 Flashcards
What are the potential causes of brain damage?
strokes, blunt force trauma, tumors, cerebral hemorrhages
What is apraxia?
difficulty with complex movement
What is agnosia?
difficulty recognizing objects as a whole
can describe parts of something but not the whole picture
what is sensory neglect?
blocking out some parts of the world
What is aphasia?
loss of ability to understand or express speech due to brain damage
- wernicke damage = receptive = adequate, but nonsensical articulation + poor comprehension
- broca damage = expressive = can’t express language = grammatical errors/ language procution is hard + adequate comprehension
What is the corpus callosum responsible for?
pathway between the hemispheres that is responsible for data to be processed in both + aids in motor coordination of both
- lateralization = sensory info is sent to opposite hemisphere crossing over in pathways to cortex
What do neuroimaging techniques allow for scientists to do?
selectively lesion/ destroy parts of the brain or stimulate the brain electrically, chemically, and magnetically?
What is an electroencephalograph(EEG)?
measures electrical activity in neurons from electrodes on the scalp
- poor spatial
- great temporal (<100 ms)
-noninvasive
what is magnetic encephalography (MEG)?
records magnetic fields from the brain’s natural electrical currents
- 50/50 spatial
- excellent temporal (1-2 s)
- noninvasive
what is positron emission topography(PET)?
measures the flow of injected radioactive substance from bloodstream to the brain
- excellent spatial
poor temporal (min)
- minimally invasive
What is functional magentic resonance imaging (fMRI)?
measures blood flow to the brain regions by comparing MRI scans = functional image
- good spatial
-poor temporal
- noninvasive
What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?
Activates/ inhibits regions of the brain by sending currents through the scalp
- good spatial at surface level
- excellent temporal (ms)
- temporarily invasive
