The Big Bang Flashcards
1
Q
What is the evidence for the Big Bang?
A
- The universe is expanding
- Galaxies are moving away from us and each other
- We can detect microwave radation throught universe which is same everywhere we look
- Cosmic microwave background radiation
- Red Shift
2
Q
Describe the Big Bang
A
- 0 seconds the Big Bang occured and time begins and space is created
- 10-32 seconds Inflation occurs
- Lightest nuclei form (Hydrogen and Helium)
- Nuclei and electrons combine to make neutral elements
- Clouds of gas form stars and heavy elements are created in their cores
- Galaxies begin to form
- Our solar system is formed
- Today
3
Q
What is the range of colours of stars?
A
- Red is Coolest
- Yellow is slightly warmer
- White is in the middle
- Blue is very hot
4
Q
What is absolute magnitude?
A
- It measures there brightness on a standard scale
5
Q
Talk about the absolute magnitude scale
A
- The scale is centred at zero
- Brighter stars have a negative absolute magnitude
- Dimmer stars have a positive absolute magnitude
- You need to make sure stars are at the same distance when comparing
6
Q
What is the life cycle of a star?
A
7
Q
Why is doppler shift measureable with space objects?
A
- Space objects are moving quickly
8
Q
What is Red Shift?
A
- A object moving away from us (has longer wavelength)
9
Q
What is Blue Shift?
A
- Object moving towards us (has shorter wavelength)
10
Q
What is the Hertzsprung Russell diagram and why is it werid?
A
- It measures the brightness and temperature of the star
- Temperature axis is inverted
