Written in Hebrew and Aramaic
39 books
The New Testament:
Specifically the Christian part of the Bible
Written in Greek
27 Books including: 4 Gospels, the acts of apostles (early years of Christianity) 13 letters by St Paul (giving advice about the Christian Life)
8 letters by other early Christian leaders and the revelation of St John
The Bible is used as…
… Christian Faith Guidebook
What does the Bible form and help guide for Christians?
It forms their beliefs and guides their actions
What directions does the Bible offer?
The Bible offers directions for living a moral life eg we best love God by showing love to others
What do BOTH testaments include?
Includes Rituals for Worship (large parts of which are still included in Modern Worship eg Holy Communion and Baptism)
What is the faith of the Roman Catholic Church based largely on?
The Scriptures (Catholic Tradition) and the Magisterium (teaching is the Pope, his Cardinals and Bishops)
What is the Literalism Interpretation?
Many Christians believe that pretty well everything in the Bible is literally true, eg Jesus really did walk on water
Why would some Christians argue against Literalism?
Some people argue that there are contradictions in the Bible, and so it’s impossible for everything in it to be literally true
What is the Fundamentalism interpretation?
This is a form of Literalism. Fundamentalists believe that it’s wrong to question anything in the Bible, since it was dictated by God
What is that Conservative View?
This View is probably the most common among Christians. They believe that the Bible was inspired by God not dictated- the writers own interests also came through. Readers must use their intelligence and guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to understand the writers intentions
What is the Liberal View?
Liberals believe that pretty well everything in the Bible can be interpreted ‘symbolically’ eg Jesus didn’t really walk on water- the story has some other ‘spiritual’ meaning
The Gospels are…
…Central to Christian Faith
Why do Christians often meet to study the Bible?
They often meet to pray, read for guidance, or as an act of devotion towards God
