What is mass media?
Forms of communication that reach a large audience.
Give examples of traditional media.

Give examples of new media.
- The Internet/ Social Media
- Mobile phones

What are the 3 types of new media?
Digital, Interactive and Dispersed
What is meant by digital (new) media?
Using a computer, for example, rather than a newspaper.
What is meant by interactive (new) media?
When an audience/ consumer can interact with the media by replying and giving own opinions, for example, using twitter (X)
What is meant by dispersed (new) media?
This is less controlled, unlike a newspaper our tabloid, which is edited etc and has limits to what it can publish. Example of these are YouTube, where content can pretty much be created and can be used to spread one’s own information.
What is a broadsheet newspaper?
This is a more serious newspaper publishing (often times) important issues such a war and politics. The Times, The Guardian etc.
What is a tabloid newspaper?
These are usually gossip-centred newspapers. They publish things such as celebrity scandals etc. Examples include The Sun, The Mirror.
What technological advancements have changed the mass media in the past 30 years?
- Number of TV channels increasing.
- Digital Broadcasting.
- Teletext and Ceefax
How many TV channels were there in 1980?
- BBC 1, 2 and ITV.
How do we access digital broadcasting?
By subscribing to a satellite service such as Sky.
How do we interact with digital broadcasting?
By voting on their polls, entering their competitions etc.
What is teletext/ ceefax?
This was a ribbon along the bottom of a screen that had a regularly updated news and information.
