  1. time and money: cheap and quick-quantitative more expensive, more time: qualitative
  2. requirements of funding bodies: funded by either gov, unis or businesses, choice of topic or method may be influenced by who funds research
  3. personal skills and characteristics: DA victim and a middle aged man
  4. subject matter: some topics/groups may be impossible to access
  5. research opportunity: the opportunity to conduct research may be out of the blue, therefore cannot have structure/planned research methods
