research process, sampling and longitudinal research Flashcards
what is the difference between an aim and hypothesis
- hypothesis: possible explanation that can be tested by collecting evidence to prove if its true or false
- aim: more general, identifying what we intend to study and hope to achieve
why do positivists favour hypothesis for the starting point of their research
they seek to discover cause and effect relationships
what does operationalisation mean
the process of converting a sociological concept into something we can measure
what is a pilot study
trying out a draft version of the research method on a small sample. BASIC AIM: iron out any problems, refine or clarify questions and their wording
pilot study may make the researcher realise that questions are worded broadly or that the answers are difficult to analyse
what did young and willmott do (pilot studys)
carried out out over 100 pilot interviews - to help decided the design of their study, the questions and how to word them
