What is the autonomic nervous system?
A
It is a homeostatic mechanism controlling various bodily functions at an unconscious level.

What 4 cranial nerves do the parasympathetic axons leave the CNS with?
A
occulomotor, facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus.

What do the sympathetic neurons leave with?
A
12 Thoracic spinal nerves and the first three lumbar spinal nerves.

What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
A
It increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels in muscles and constricts blood vessels in the skin. (Thumping of heart when your frightened)

What does the parasympathetic do?
A
Decreases the heart rate.
