Anatomy of the brain* Flashcards
The brain is divided into which three sections? And what is in these sections?
- Forebrain (The cerebral hemispheres and diencephalon).
- Midbrain
- Hindbrain (pons, medulla, oblongata and cerebellum).
What is the medulla oblongata?
An upward extension of the spinal cord.
What is the pons?
It is an upward continuation of the medulla but also links to the cerebellum.
Where is the cerebellum?
It is posterior to the brainstem.
What does the midbrain link?
The brain stem to the cerebral hemispheres.
What does the diencephalon comprise of?
The thalamus and the hypothalamus.
What is the thalamus?
It is a relay center for info entering the hemispheres.
What does the hypothalamus control?
It controls autonomic functions and basic drives such as feeding and drinking.
What lobes are the brain divided into?
Frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital.
On the midline, the brain is seperated into three parts. Name these parts?
- The central sulcus extends onto the medial surface.
- The parieto-occipital fissure.
- The corpus callosum contains the left and right hemispheres.
