the atmosphere Flashcards
what gasses were present in the early atmosphere
first volcanoes release carbon dioxide and water vapour (also small amounts of methane and ammonia)
then some of the carbon dioxide dissolved in the oceans to form weak acids which then reacted wiht salts in the ocean to form precipitates
how was coal formed
from the reamains of ferns and trees in anaerobic conditions or when there is a lack of decomposers due to not having the right conditions. This is then compressed under high temperature and pressure
how was oil formed
the remains of plankton being compressed by sediment under heat and pressure
how was natural gas formed
natural gas is mainly methane and is found near oil as it is formed in a similar way to oil
