rates of reaction Flashcards
what is the collision theory
chemical reactions only take place when particles collide with sufficient energy. the rate of chemical reactions are determined by the frequency of collisions
how can you investigae the rate of reaction
One method is to react sodium thiosulphate with hydrochloric acid to make sulfur which is a solid. This reaction will be done on a printed black cross and we time how long it takes until we can no longer see the cross. The second method involeves measuring the amount of volume of gas produced after a reation using a delivery tube
how does surface area affect rates of reaction
increaseing surface area increases the amount of particles on the surface of a solid this inreases the rate of reaction
if a reaction graph has goes down what kind of reaction is it
exothermic as it has lost energy to the surroundings
if a reaction graph has up down what kind of reaction is it
endothermic as it has gained energy from the surroundings
what is le chateliers principle
if a system is at equillibrium and a change is made to the conditions of the reactions, the system will then respond by counteracting the original change to the equlibrium
