What is the role of the speaker in te assembly
Its main role is to oversee proceedings in the assembly and make sure everything runs as it should while also being chair of the business committee and the assembly commission

What is the legislative role of the speaker
They assess the competence of legislation prior to the first and final stages of the bill.
They send a copy of the bill to the human rights commission then send to the secretary of state to obtain royal assent allowing it to be a new bill as an act of parliament
What is the ambassadorial role of the speaker
The speaker receives VIP visitors from overseas to parliament buildings, this includes heads of state and senior politicians.
the speaker will host a range of events to promote wider understandings of the work of the assembly
What is the procedural role of the speaker
This is the main role of the speaker
The speaker keeps order in the assembly, selects amendments and motions for debates as well as selects questions for oral answers.
The speaker manages day-to-day running of the legislative chamber through scheduling debates, overseeing question time and manages plenary sessions of the assembly

through MLAs at the first session of the assembly following an election, three deputy speakers are also selected to assist with duties
