What is the Hillsborough castle agreement

A

This was an agreement resolved the issue of devolution of the policing and justice powers.

These powers were finally transferred despite reluctance of the DUP in 2010 with Gordon brown and Irish PM brian Cowen signing this agreement with the DUP and SF

What were the main features of the hillsborough castle agreement 1.

  1. The transfer of policing and justice powers to NI
  2. The decommissioning of weapons by the Irish National liberation army (INLA), the official IRA and south east antrim UDA which took place on 8th february 2010 one day before the amnesty. this was an important step in showing NI was moving forward and can be trusted with justice powers.
  3. Chief constable was made responsible for directing and controlling the police

  2. a working group of 6 people (3 DUP, 3 SF) was set up to investigate a new way to deal with parades. didnt work
  3. A working group set up to investigate ways the executive could be improved
  4. The first and deputy minister were asked to identify all areas of the st andrews agreement that was resolved to draw up a plan for full implementation.
