Logos
Definition: to appeal to the audiences' sense of reason or logic Example #1: All men are mortal. Example #2: All dogs are mammals.
Ethos
Definition:
the character or emotions of a speaker or writer that are expressed in the attempt to persuade an audience
Example #1:
“As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.”
Example #2:
A commercial about a specific brand of toothpaste says that 4 out of 5 dentists use it.
Pathos
Definition:
persuade an audience by purposely evoking certain emotions to make them feel the way the author wants them to feel
Example #1:
A teenager tries to convince his parents to buy him a new car by saying if they cared about their child’s safety they’d upgrade him.
Example #2:
A boyfriend begs his girlfriend to stay with him, claiming “If you really love me, you’ll give me time to change my ways.”
