The Arches of the Foot Flashcards
The main function of the arches of the foot are to
act as shock absorbers
What are the arches of the foot?
1) Anterior Transverse Arch
2) Lateral Longitudinal Arch
3) Medial Longitudinal Arch
The arches are maintained and supported by
1) the shape of the interlocking bones
2) the ligaments
3) the fascia
4) the action of muscle
Which arch are these bones found in?
Calcaneous, Talus, Navicular, 3 Cuniforms, Metatarsals 1-3
Medial Longitudinal Arch
Which arch are these bones found in?
Calcaneous, cuboid, metatarsals 4-5
Lateral Longitudinal Arch
Involves the whole length of the foot
the anterior portion: head of the 1st MT to the head of the 5th MT
the middle portion: cuneiform #1 to cuboid
the posterior portion: navicular to cuboid
Transverse Arch
The thick, central fascia (connective tissue) on the sole of the foot
Attaches: medial calcaneal tubercle proximal phalanx of each toe
The Plantar Fascia
As the toes extend, the plantar fascia tightens. As it tightens, it pulls the calcaneus anteriorly and elevates the arches (puts into a position of supination)
This is known as
The Windlass Mechanism
