The Archaeologits Flashcards
What are the skills and methods used by archaeologists
Radio carbon dating, geophysical surveying, pollen analysis, stratigraphy, dendrochronology, dna testing,3D reconstruction and bones
What dendrochronology?
Dendrochronology, also known as as tree-ring dating, is a method of dating that uses the unique growth patterns of tree rings as a guide
What is an artefact?
Human made object
What is archaeology?
A study of remains left by people in the past
What is a site?
A place were excavations take place
What is excavation?
When archaeologists dig up the ground to find evidence left by people in the past
What is evidence?
Something that gives us information
What is an aerial photograph?
A photograph taken of the ground from an elevated position, for example from a helicopter or drone
What is radiocarbon dating?
A method of dating based on the falling levels of carbon-14 in tissue over time
What is stratigraphy?
A method of dating artefacts and evidence by how deep in the ground they were when found
What is pollen analysis?
The study of pollen remains to find out what was growing at a site during a particular time period
