The archaeologist Flashcards
Rescue archeology
Is when archaeologists start a dig before builders start constructing
Research archeology
Some sites are chosen to be exavated if there is document says that there is an artefact meant to be on that site
Geophysical survey
When archeologists get a machine to x-ray the soil beneath
Aerial photograph
A photo do the site taken from the sky. Because features might not be visible from the ground.
Post-holes
Dark patches left by wooden poles in the soil. They might show the outline of a house even though the house no longer exists.
Carbon and radiocarbon dating
A method of dating artefacts. All living things contain carbon-14. When a living thing dies it loses it’s carbon 14. The older the living thing the less carbon 14 in it.
Dendrochronolgy
A method of dating wooden objects. Each year a tree adds a ring to its trunk. These rings add up the age if the tree. Archeologists study ring patters to date them.
Archeologist
Dig the ground to find clues left by our ansesters
Artefact
Man made tools from the past
Stratigraphy
A method of dating artefacts. The lower down in the soil they are found the older they are.
