The Altimeter Flashcards
Indicated Altitude
whatever your altimeter is reading
True Altitude
Actual Height above sea level. Expressed in MSL (Mean Sea Level)
Pressure Altitude
Height of something above the standard datum plane.
What is the Standard Datum Plane
Imaginary line we draw, where air pressure equals 29.92. Which is an average line. Line can be below or above sea level. When it matches sea level its called Standard Day
Absolute Altitude
Height above the surface. Expressed in AGL (Above ground level). True altitude may stay the same, but absolute will change depending on terrain.
Density altitude
pressure altitude corrected for non standard temperature. Based on pressure altitude and temperature.
what are the 4 h’s of bad aircraft performance?
High temp, Hot, Heavy (weight), Humid.
What temperature is the altimeter calibrated at?
Altimeter is calibrated to 15 degrees celcius (59F)
Temperature above 15 degrees celicius means what for air pressure?
Lower air pressure
True north is?
North pole
Compasses point where
Magnetic north, which is somewhere in Northern Canada
Explain Magnetic Dip
Earth core is a large magnet, creates magnetic lines. Magnetic lines align to magnets force from the earths core. These magnetic lines are parellel at the core, then dip down to the core the further you get.
What problems come from Magnetic dip?
Acceleration error & turning Errors
explain ANDS
Accelerate North, Decelerate South
