The Alps Flashcards
Forestry
Height of 1800m the slopes are covered in coniferous forest, giving rise to the timber industry
The soft wood is felled for use as fuel, building, and manufacture of wood pulp and paper
Tourism
New resorts (eg. St moritz & chamonix developed in 1950s when skiing expanded)
Lakeland summer resorts (eg. Lucerne and Garda)
Good communications, close to international road & rail routes using alpine passes (eg. The Simpion, airports at Geneva & Zurich)
Close to affluent parts of Europe
Winter sports
HEP
Steep slopes, high precipitation, summer melting of glaciers = fast flowing rivers
Narrow valleys easy to dam
Lakes store water
Cheap HEP used by sawmills
Farming
Valley floor = flat land, deep & fertile souls, shelter from wind
Little flat land so machinery is difficult
Traditional farming is dairying
Hay and cereals grown with sugar beet, vines and fruit in warmer areas
Dairy farmers use transhumance (seasonal movement of animals)
Problems in fold mountains
Avalanches & rock falls block roads
Roads& railways need expensive tunnels, Avalanche shelters, hairpin bends
Low population density
Cold wet climate & heavy snowfall & high winds means growing season is short & travel is difficult
High altitude & steep slopes means it’s hard to build houses & communication links
Alps population is higher than other fold mountains because fertile land
