Over 20 villages and two thirds of homes on island were destroyed by pyroclastic flows

4-5 million cubic meters of rocks & Gas were released in large eruption
Large areas covered in volcanic material (Plymouth buried under 12m of mud and ash)
Long term effects
Population decline- 8000 of 12000 left since eruptions began in 1995
Tourism now increasing because people come to see volcano
Fires destroyed government offices, police HQ and petrol station
