The Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the main difference between the alkenes and the alkanes?
A
There is one carbon-carbon double bond present
2
Q
Define an unsaturated compound
A
A compound which contains one or more double or triple bonds between the atoms in the molecule
3
Q
What is the common ending for the alkenes?
A
‘ene’
4
Q
Give the names of the first nine alkenes
A
Ethene Propene Butene Pentene Hexene Heptene Octene Nonene Decene
5
Q
What is the chemical formula for the first nine alkenes?
A
C2H4 C3H6 C4H8 C5H10 C6H12 C7H14 C8H16 C9H18 C10H20
6
Q
What is the general formula for alkenes?
A
CnH2n
7
Q
How do you name an alkene?
4
A
- Count the carbons
- Count up to the double bond starting from the side it is closest to
- Count from the same side up to the alkyl group
- Order the name beginning with the position of the alkyl group then the name of the alkyl group then the position of the the double bond then the name according to the amount of carbons i.e. 5-methyl-2-hexane
