The Agricultural Revolution Flashcards
Jethro Tull
An English agriculturist from Berkshire who helped to bring about the British Agricultural Revolution of the 18th century. He perfected a horse-drawn seed drill in 1701 that economically sowed the seeds in neat rows, and later developed a horse-drawn hoe. Tull’s methods were adopted by many landowners and helped to provide the basis for modern agriculture.
Joseph Foljambe
Patented the Rotherham triangular plough which has an iron blade that was lighter and easier to use than the traditional wooden plough.
‘Turnip’ Townshend
Promoted adoption of the Norfolk four-course system, involving rotation of turnips, barley, clover, and wheat crops
Robert Bakewell
Bakewell was one of the first farmers to breed both sheep and cattle for meat instead of primarily for wool or work
