The 14 Hormones Flashcards
Human Growth Hormone (hGH)
-Secreted by anterior pituitary gland
-Target: Bone & Soft tissue
-Helps bone/soft tissue grow
-metabolism of glucose and fuel molecules
-growth of body
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
-Secreted by anterior pituitary gland
-Target: Thyroid
-Secretion of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4)
-Growth of thyroid gland
Thyroxine
-Secreted from thyroid
-Target: Liver and Kidneys
-Metabolism
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
-Secreted by anterior pituitary gland
-Target: Ovaries and Testes
-Regulates ovulation and forms corpus luteum
-Testosterone production
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
-Secreted by anterior pituitary gland
-Target: Ovaries and Testes
-Egg growth/development
-Estrogen production
-Sperm production
Testosterone
-Secreted by leydig cells and adrenal glands in small quantities
-Target: Testes, prostate, hair follicles and muscles
-Regulated fertility in men, muscle mass, fat distribution, and RBC production
Estrogen
-Secreted from ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells (small amounts)
-Targets female reproduction tract, urinary tract, heart/blood vessels, bone, breasts, skin, hair, mucous membrane, pelvic muscles and brain
-Regulating menstrual cycle
Progesterone
-Secreted from adrenal cortex gonads (ovaries and testes)
-Target: Uterine endometrium
-Prepare endometrium for a fertilized egg to implant ang grow
Insulin
-Secreted by pancreas
-Target: Liver, skeletal muscle, and fat
-Increases permeability
Glucagon
-Secreted by pancreas
-Target: Liver
-Promotes conversion of glycogen and glucose
-Increases blood sugar
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
-Secreted by posterior pituitary
-Target: Kidneys
-Increases BP and pressure by increasing water reabsorption in kidneys
Aldosterone
-Secreted by adrenal cortex
-Target: Kidneys
-Regulates BP and electrolytes (Na and K)
Melatonin
-Secretes by pineal gland
-Targets areas of the brain, cells in the immune sys, gonads, kidneys, cardiovascular sys
-Helps with circadian rhythm and sleep
Epinephrine &
-Secreted by Adrenal Medulla
-Targets alpha and beta receptors in muscles, lungs, heart, and blood vessels
-Acts as BOTH neurotransmitters and Hormones
-Role in fight/flight response
