Lesson 1: Intro & Feedback Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Our body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment
What does “internal environment” mean?
In reference to extracellular fluid (ECF) which can change based on temp, volume, chemical composition, etc.
What is feedback?
How to body communicates with itself to send signals and change variables to maintain homeostasis
What is positive feedback?
The increase of one variable causes the increase of another variable (Ex. labour contrations continuing so baby is born)
What is negative feedback?
A change is reversed so that it can be brought back to the acceptable range (Ex. Sweating to reverse temp increase)
What does a monitor do?
A monitor detects the change in the variable
What does a control centre do?
Processes the change and sets the expected range of maintainance
What do effectors do?
They receive the signals from the control centre
