How to assess and treat for a pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax
A
May occur with chest/abdomen/shouler/neck entry wounds
- Significatnt chest
- Severe respiratory distress
- Decreased breat sounds on one side of chest
- O2 less than 90%
- Cardiac arrest w/o obvious fatal wounds

When a needle decompression is indicated
A
Wtih tension pneumothorax, to let trapped air to escape

How to assess and care for a sucking chest wound
A
- Burb/remove chest seal
- Decompress injured side 5th intercostal space along anterior axillary line or 2nd ICS mid clavicular line (not inside the nipple
- If first successful but symptoms return, insert a second proximate to first with a new needle
- If unsuccessful insert a second needle at the different site
If CAS doesnt have pneumo. the needle wont make it worse

A
open pneumothorax
whole larger air enters the hole
apply vented seal over the wound at end of exhalation
burp and reseal to relieve pressure
if unsuccessful apply NCD
