CUF Hemmorage Control Flashcards
Characteristics of hemorrhagic injuries that are life-threatening
- There is pulsatile or steady bleeding from the wound
- Blood is pooling on the ground
- Clothes are soaked in blood
- Bandages over wound are ineffective and soaked in blood
- Traumatic amputation of arm or leg
- There was prior bleeding and now patient is in shock
How to self-apply a limb tourniquet
CAS and medic are in danger while TQ is being applied.
Risk of further injury vs. bleeding to death has to be determined.
Apply TQ without removing uniform.
TQ should be proximal to bleeding site. (when unsure, high and tight)
Tighten TQ until bleeding is controlled.
If 1st TQ fails, apply another above the first.
No TQ over knee or elbow.
No TQ over holster/cargo pocket.
How to apply a limb tourniquet to another casualty
How to determine bleeding site and proper tourniquet application
How to recognize a CoTCCC approved tourniquet
Label
How to avoid mistakes in applying a tourniquet
Use only approved TQs
Not using when should or waiting too long
Not pulling all slack out before tightening
Using TQ for minimal bleeding
Putting TQ on too proximally if bleeding is obvious
Not taking it off when indicated during TFC
Taking TQ off when CAS is in shock or has short TRANS to hospital
Not making it tight enough (stop bleed and pulse)
Not using a 2nd TQ if needed
Loosening TQ to allow blood flow to extremity
Determining when a tourniquet should be used
Use a TQ for severe bleeding
How to monitor patient and tourniquet application
How long to bleed to death from complete femoral artery and vein disruption?
3 minutes.
