What are fibres?
Raw materials used to make up fabrics
Where do natural fibres come from?
Plants and animals (cotton, silk - silk worms, wool)
Where do man-made fibres come from?
A range of sources including coal, minerals, petrochemicals and oil
What are blended/ mixed fibres?
Fibres that have been mixed together to improve: quality, aesthetic, cost or function
What is each part called in a woven fabric?
Weft (goes left), warp (goes down) and selve edge (the edge of wefts)
What are non-woven fabrics properties and uses?
They lack strength, they are used for decorative/ disposable products
How are bonded fabrics made?
Manufactured by applying pressure and heat or adhesives to bond fibres together.
What are knitted fabrics?
Made up of interlocking loops which are known as stitches
What are the uses of bonded fabrics?
Wet wipes, tea bags and covid masks
How are felted fabrics made?
By applying heat, moisture and frictions to fibres that matt together
What is an example of felted fabrics?
Pool table tops
