Renewable Energy Flashcards
What are fossil fuels?
Remains of dead organisms (e.g. coal, oil, natural gases)
What is nuclear power?
Steam needed to drive turbines is created in a nuclear reactor
What is non-renewable energy sources?
Sources that will eventually run out. E.g. fossil fuels + nuclear power
What is renewable energy sources?
Sources that won’t run out and will replenish themselves (e.g. wind, solar, hydro electric, biomass)
What does solar panels do?
They convert sun energy into electricity
What are the advantages of solar pannels?
Sunlight won’t run out for a long time
No waste products
What are the disadvantages of solar panels?
Don’t work at night
Installation cost is expensive
What are the disadvantages of wind turbines?
Noisy
Ruin landscape
What does wind turbines do?
They catch wind and turn it into energy
What does hydro electric dams do?
They hold water in a dam which is released which turns turbines creating energy
What are the advantages of wind turbines?
No waste of gases
What are the advantages of hydro electric dams?
Clean
Sustainable
What are the disadvantages of hydro electric dams?
Destroys habitats
Can cause flooding
What are the advantages of biomass?
Readily available
Uses up carbon dioxide
What does biomass do?
Fuel is created from crops, scrap wood and animal waste
