Motion Flashcards
What is linear motion?
Moves something in a straight line
What is reciprocating motion?
Repeating motion in a straight line (e.g. up and down)
What is rotary/ angular/ circular motion?
Where something moves around an axis or pivot point
What is oscillating motion?
A curved backwards and forwards movement that swings on an axis or pivot point
Can an oscillating object forever be in motion?
No as opposing forces like friction or resistance will prevent this
Examples of linear motion:
Pushing a pen, train, tram, car
Examples of reciprocating motion:
Sewing machine needle, piston, pump
Examples of rotary/ angular/ circular motion:
Wheels, record/ CD player, bike pedals
Examples of oscillating motion:
Clock pendulum, door handle, swing
What is a mechanism?
Involved with the transmission of movement (converts one type of motion to another), found within a machine
What is a machine?
Combination of fixed and moving mechanical components that transmits and modifies the action of force or torque to do useful work
What is an engine?
Converts a natural energy source into a motion or force for a particular application
Explain compression force and how it’s used:
Squashing force
Car crusher
Explain tensional force and how it’s used:
Pulling force
In a rope, cable or string
Explain bending force and how it’s used:
Combination of tension and compression
Bending of spoon (whilst being shaped)
Explain shearing force and how it’s used:
Unaligned forces acting on one part of the body
Scissors
Explain torsional force and how it’s used:
Twisting
Wringing out a towel
