Textiles Flashcards
What are fibres
Fibres are a fine flexible material, tthat can be very long or short
What are the types of fibres
Staple - short
Continuous filament - are indefinite in length
Micro fibres - very fine fibres
Give some natural vegetable fibres
Cotton, linen
Give some natural animal fibres
Wool, silk, camel, cashmere
Give some man made synthetic fibres
Poiyester, nylon, acryclic
Give some man made inorganic fibres
Glass and metal
Talk about wool
The most common animal fibre, found in bvundles, they are good insulators andhighly absorybant, they are hydrophobic, with elasticity, but it is not very durable
Talk about silk
Silk is a the only natural continuous filament, it is cool and warm , it is agood insulator, it can absorb a fair amount of water, and is very strong and durable .
Talk about leather
Leather is durable and flexible, it has high tensile strength, good insulation and are permable to water vapour, it can be mouled, and acts as a thermostatic material to temperature.
Talk about cashmere,
It is very soft, similar to wool but can have a silky quality, it is lightweight but not very durable
Talk about cotton
It is very absorbant, it has a soft handle, it is durable and abrassive resistant, it does have poor elasticity and poor driability though
Talk about linen
Linenis strong and durbale, and fast sdrying, easy to wash and handle, shrink proof, but has poor elasticity, poor insulationn and coarse fibres
Talk about rubber,
Rubber is a natural latex, it is warm, it is antislip and bacterial, it is very tensile but it isnt very breathable.
Talk about glass fibre
It is heat and cold resistant, non toxic and stick, chemical resistant and has reflective properties
Talk about nylon
A man made fibre which is easy to wash and ry, it is very strong and has high abrasion resitance, it is very elastic and can be set with heat
