textbook Flashcards
What is the difference between empirically supported treatment and evidence-based treatment?
EST- more specific, board-reviewed process
EBT- broader, more inclusive. Less criteria
What are common factors in text? What were some mentioned in class?
support factors: empathy, exploration, reduce isolation, alliance, expertise,
learning factors: cognitive knowledge, emotional resonance, insight, feedback
action factors: practice, real world insight, exposure, modelling
good attributes of clients
SES, gender, age, ethnic matching, personality, functioning, expectation,
good attributes of therapist
years of experience, emotional health/ stability
criticism of meta-analysis
publication bias- only used stat. significant data, and published research
the explanation for effect size?
standardized metric that allow to compare combine research results
Process of EST?
Reduction of symptoms, improvement of the functioning
1. board from a wide range of experts
2. establish a meta-analysis from lit from the past two years. The efficacy of treatment is analyzed from research/ trials.
3. use tools to analyze biases from studies, and also of the meta-analysis itself.
establish conclusion
Process of Evidence-based initiative?
three criteria usually have to be met: 1. minimum of one high-quality RCT(type 1). 2. preferably manualized. 3. description of who is receiving the treatment(disorders)
–If a condition has limited research, can still determine evidence-based treatment: type 1-3 trials
Type 1-6 trials?
1: high-quality RCT
2: imperfect RCT
3: open-pilot studies
4. meta-analysis
5. lit-reviews
6. case-study
APA task force recommended demonstrably & probably effective elements therapy relationship/ adaptation?
Demonstrably Effective Elements
Alliance in psychotherapy Cohesion in group therapy Empathy Collecting client feedback Adapting to client reactance/resistance level Adapting to client treatment preferences Adapting to client culture Adapting to client religion/spirituality
Probably Effective Elements Goal consensus Collaboration Positive regard (treating clients in a warm and accepting manner) Adapting to client stage of change Adapting to client coping style
APA task force evidence-based relationship practice and training recommendations?
For Practice
Create a therapy relationship characterized by the elements found to be demonstrably and probably effective.
Adapt the therapy relationship to specific patient characteristics.
Monitor patients’ responses to the therapy relationship and ongoing treatment
Use both evidence-based therapy relationships and evidence-based treatments adapted to the patient to obtain the best outcomes for the patient.
For Training
Train students in the demonstrably and probably effective elements of the therapy relationship and the methods for adapting therapy.
Provide continuing education for professionals in the demonstrably and probably effective elements of the therapy relationship and the methods for adapting therapy.
Develop accreditation and certification criteria for assessing the adequacy of training in evidence-based psychotherapy relationships.
