Tests for common gases

Test for Hydrogen gas

Answer 1

Light splint, Place the burning splint into the hydrogen gas,The hydrogen burns with a squeaky pop

Question 2

Test for Carbon Dioxide

Answer 2

Pour limewater into a test tube or beaker, Bubble the gas into the limewater, The carbon dioxide will turn the limewater milky/cloudy

Question 3

Test for oxygen

Answer 3

Get a glowing splint (one without a flame but glowing red at the end), Get your sample of gas and put the splint inside, If the gas is oxygen the splint will relight because burning requires oxygen

Question 4

Test for chlorine

Answer 4

Get blue litmus paper and dampen it and put it inside your test tube of samplegas, If the gas is chlorine the litmus paper will turn from blue to white (might turn red before white because the chlorine dissolves on the water on the damp paper and forms hydrochloric acid then grts bleached and goes white)
