What is Kernig’s sign
Test for meningitis
Patient lies on back with one leg at 90* and then straightens it to 45*
This will cause pain and the patient will not be able to do this
What is Brudzinski’s sign
Test for meningitis
Patient lies flat on back and places chin on chest and if positive the legs/ hips will flex upwards
What is photophobia
Test for meningitis
An aversion to light
What is Akinesia
Loss of voluntary movement
What is diplopia
Double vision- caused by brainstem dysfunction
What is ataxia
Decreased voluntary control- caused by cerebellar leision
What is an atonic seizure
Also known as a head drop seizure just a sudden drop with no warning at all
What is a tonic seizure
A seizure consisting of stiffness
What is a clonic seizure
A seizure consisting of shaking or twitching
What is a myoclonic seizure
A twitching of one appendage/ limb
What is an absent seizure
A seizure consisting of becoming withdrawn and daydreaming, will not respond
What is a tonic clonic seizure
A seizure consisting of stiffness and convulsions
What is pyrexia
High temperature / fever
What is hypotonia
Floppy, seen more in kids and babies
What is pleuritic chest pain
Chest pain that worsens on inspiration
