Criterion-Referenced Test
A
Each question is written to a presented criterion. The only person a student competes against on a criterion referenced test is him or herself. (CRCT, EOCT, GACE) [teacher made tests can be criterion]

Norm-Referenced test
A
Standardized test that measures a students performance by comparing his or her performance to the performance of his or her peer test takers.(SAT, ACT, ITBS)

Purpose of a Criterion-Referenced Test
A
To measure how well a student has learned a body of knowledge and skill.

Purpose for Norm-Referenced Test
A
To determine a students’ placement on a normal distribution curve. NRT are used to determine competitive ranking and for diagnostic purposes.
