Add dilute nitric acid
Then silver nitrate solution
Chloride precipitate colour (Halide ions test)
White
Bromide precipitate colour (Halide ions test)
Cream
Iodide precipitate colour (Halide ions test)
Yellow
Test for carbonates
Add Barium chloride
- Produce white precipitate if carbonates
Add hydrochloric acid
- Mixture will fizz, producing carbon dioxide
Test for sulfate
Add Barium chloride
- If sulfates, white precipitate formed
Add hydrochloric acid
- White precipitate won’t dissolve
