Testing For Ions Flashcards
0
Q
How do you test for sulfate ions?
A
Add dilute HCL followed by barium chloride solution and if a white precipitate of barium sulfate is created then the original compound was a sulfate
1
Q
How do you test for carbonates?
A
Carbonates react with dilute acids to form carbon dioxide
Acid + carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxid
2
Q
How do you test for chloride ions?
A
Add dilute nitric acid followed by silver nitrate solution. A chloride gives a white precipitate of silver chloride
3
Q
What is spectroscopy?
A
Can be used to identify samples by passing them through a heated sample and analysing the patterns of light emitted
