Ionic bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
Transfer of electrons to form positively or negatively charged atoms
Why do group 1 & 2 and 6 & 7 most likely form ions?
Group 1 & 2 elements are metals and want to lose electrons and form cations
Group 6 & 7 elements are non metal and want to gain electrons to form anions
Why do elements want to lose and gain electrons?
So they can have a full outer shell and become stable
Describe the structure of an ionic compound
They have a closely packed regular lattice arrangement
They have very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
Why do ionic compounds have high boiling and melting points?
This is due to the very strong between the ions and it takes a lot of energy to break the bonds
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or aqueous?
When in aqueous solution the ions separate and are all free to move so they can carry and electric current and the same happens when they ate molten
What are the rules for naming ionic compounds?
Rule 1: if two different elements combine then the name will end in -IDE
Rule 2: if three or more elements combine and one is oxygen then the name will end in -ATE
